Where's The Beef

Today after a round of golf my son-in-law, Anth, asked me if I wanted to have a little “Scottish”.  Scottish in Brunei?  Tenatively I indicated that I would.

Well it turns out that to have a little Scottish is to go to MacDonalds.  Yes they have a MacDonalds in Brunei.  I think about the only place in the world that I have been were I did not see a MacDonalds was Cuba and, come to think of it, Syria.

The Brunei MacDonalds is a reasonably large, modern and busy franchise. So when I walked in I anticipated having a Big Mac, my usual MacDonalds fare.  It was not to happen.  As a complete shocker to me . . . I had entered a MacDonalds that had run out of beef.  There was not a hamburger to be had.  Lots of chicken and fish but the hamburgers were, as this picture shows "Out of Stock" (I took this picture of the display behind the counter).   Like the old woman from those Wendy’s commercials, I was compelled to ask, “Where’s the beef?"

Anth explained to me that this is not an uncommon experience. Yikes! Eventually, I did have a chicken burger and it was good, but it was no Big Mac.

Sigh . . . it’s a beautiful place, but there is still much I have to get used to in Brunei.
