A Haircut

Yesterday my wife, my daughter and our two grandchildren visited Times Square. Not the one in New York. Nope this Times Square is in Brunei Darussalam and the New York version need not be threatened. One purpose of the visit was to get a little shopping done but primarily to get Alex's hair cut. That was my job.

We did not go to a barber. Sara said she used "The Cutting Crew Hair Salon" so that is where we went. A young Malay woman was designated for the challenge and immediately went to work getting a high seat and draping Alex in a cover. I said we just needed a trim and not to cut it too short.

I guess the first problem was that she did not understand a thing that I said but proceeded anyway. I was really puzzled when she tried to put hair clips in his hair. Alex, who was very curious about what was going on, kept turning his head to see what she was up to and made the clipping job a non-starter. I tried to distract him so she could get on with her work but was not very successful. After about five minutes of attempted clipping it was down tools and she disappeared from the room. She was more used to working on 19 year olds rather than 19 month olds. A minute later a man appears and introduces himself as Sam Lee the owner of the salon. He spoke very good English and said he will do the work. He asked me how I would like HER hair cut. I explained she is a he.

"Ahh " says Sam.

As it turns out Sam is good at his job. He brought along a tablet computer, placed it on the counter in front of Alex, and flashed up a game called Angry Birds. He got me to play the game as Alex watched in fascination. Sam was fast and with very little fuss the job was done.

And now Alex is very much looking like a boy.
