The universe is a chaotic hostile place for the likes of us carbon based beings. In this chaos, the planet earth provides the sanctuary for life as we know it and we humans try to impose order and meaning to our existence. For the most part we are successful. But the recent events in Japan certainly do make me think of how tenuous all life really is and of the awesome power of nature.
