Golf in England

.
Yesterday my wife and I returned from a three week Christmas holiday in Durham, England visiting our daugther. My son-in-law urged me to bring my golf clubs. I admit I was a little skeptical at his suggestion that I could golf at this time of the year. After all, Durham is 1100 kilometers further north than Halifax, Nova Scotia. My last game in Nova Scotia was in early November when it snowed and my home course closed. In any case, I did take my clubs with me.

Well, the weather in northern England is entirely different than that of Nova Scotia. In fact, the weather was excellent for golf to my mind. It was indeed cool (5 to 10 degrees above zero Celsius mostly) but on the days that I golfed there was little wind to speak of and usually I was comfortable with a couple of layers of sweaters. In this picture, taken on 26 December 2008 and with Brancepeth Castle in the background, is that not a comfortable looking golfing dude? (Click on the picture to enlarge)

I guess the inhabitants of Northumbria in England have the Gulf Stream to thank for their milder weather. I just wish Nova Scotia stuck a little further out into the Atlantic so that we received more of that Gulf Stream heat.
